District Guided Day Walks - 2010
To secure a place on a walk please book in advance. Most walks
are on a Saturday or Sunday, circular, starting and finishing at
the meeting point and cost £20 per person.
Please check booking conditions and recommended equipment. Times
for the walks exclude stops for food and drink.
Monday 3rd May 2010:
Skiddaw
One of the best routes to the top of Skiddaw,
taking in lovely views and exciting ridges. From Bassenthwaite we
head towards the open fells to join the Allerdale Ramble climbing
along a narrow ridge to Carl Side, before turning left to the summit
of Skiddaw. From here we head down towards Bakestall, before descending
to join the Cumbria Way and returning to Bassenthwaite.

Saturday 15th May 2010: Ingleborough
A beautiful walk in limestone country to the top
of Ingleborough passing the famous Gaping Gill pot hole. From the
summit we head east to a limestone scar, and follow a route past
limestone pavements and outcrops before descending to a lane heading
back to Clapham

Sunday 16th May 2010: Kentmere Round
One of Wainwright's classic horseshoe walks, this walk starts
in the beautiful valley of Kentmere, following a long ridge to Harter Fell
with stunning views over Haweswater. After descending to Nan Bield
Pass we continue over several more fells before returning to the start.

Sunday 13th June 2010:
Glaramara and Allen Crags
A superb ridge walk along two of the less well
trodden peaks in the centre of The Lake District, passing several
rocky outcrops, with fantastic views of some of the better known
summits. We return to our start following the popular Scafell descent
route of Grains Gill.

Saturday 24th July 2010: Walla
Crag and Latrigg including Castlerigg Stone Circle
This varied walk is a circuit of Keswick takes
in two stunning viewpoints, and a stone circle in an amazing setting.
From the car park we follow the lake before climbing steeply by
Cat Gill to the top of Walla Crag, a fantastic setting with views
over Derwentwater. From here, we descend gradually to reach Castlerigg
Stone Circle. Continuing on over the River Greta, we then climb
Latrigg, with more great views, before descending back to Keswick.

Sunday 22nd August 2010: Haystacks and
Fleetwith Pike
This is a special route to the top of Wainwight's
favourite Lake District summit, with its beautiful rocky scenery
and lovely small tarns. Firstly, we climb up an exciting route to
the top of Fleetwith Pike, then pass an area of interesting old
mining remains, before continuing to the summit of Haystacks. After
enjoying the views of all the surrounding higher mountains we descend
to Buttermere, and back to the car park.

Pike
A demanding route to the summit of England’s
highest mountain. This is the best circular walk to get to the top
with wonderful views among stunning rock scenery.

Sunday 12th September 2010: Helvellyn
by Striding Edge
Leaving Glenridding we follow a steep path up
to Birkhouse Moor following along to the Hole in The Wall where
we should hopefully be able to get a great view. We scramble along
Striding Edge to the summit and descend Swirral Edge, with an option
to do the short climb to Catstycam before descending back to Glenridding
via Greenside Mine.

Sunday 17th October 2010: The Dodds,
Helvellyn Ridge
A high moorland route along part of the Helvellyn
ridge, along indistinct and often wet paths, but including 4 Wainwrights.
From the car park, we follow the old coach road, before turning
left over moorland, gradually rising to the top of Great Dodd. We
then follow the ridge over Watsons Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd, head
down over Hart Side, before finally descending Birkett Fell to Dowthwaitehead
and back to the car park.

Saturday 6th November 2010: Steel Fell
and Helm Crag
From Grasmere we take the path to the top of Helm
Crag famous for The Lion and Lamb rocks on top, continue along the
ridge past Gibson Knott to Calf Crag, and then cross to Steel Fell
before descending the southeast ridge back into the village.
